Quick answer

Install 2Subs, open a supported streaming video with captions, turn captions on in the player, then choose your source and translated subtitle languages in the popup. 2Subs draws the dual subtitle overlay while the video plays.

1. Install and pin 2Subs

Add 2Subs from the Chrome Web Store. It works in supported Chromium-based desktop browsers including Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc and Vivaldi.

2. Choose your subtitle pair

Use the original subtitle line from the video when it is available, then choose the translated line you want underneath it. You can swap languages and adjust the overlay from the popup.

3. Turn captions on in the player

2Subs needs subtitle data from the streaming site. Turn captions on in Netflix, YouTube or the supported video player first, then press play and keep watching.

4. Tune the overlay

Change size, position, opacity and style presets so the subtitles are comfortable on your monitor. Larger text is often better for language learning sessions.

Best setup for a first session

StepRecommended choiceWhy
VideoChoose a show or YouTube video with clear captions.Good captions make translation and timing more reliable.
Subtitle 1Use the language spoken in the video. This keeps sound and spelling connected.
Subtitle 2Use your strongest language as support. You can keep watching without pausing to look up every line.
StyleStart with a larger preset and dark background.Readable subtitles reduce fatigue during long sessions.

Troubleshooting

No subtitles appear

Make sure captions are turned on in the video player first. If the streaming site does not expose usable subtitle data for that video, 2Subs may not be able to draw the overlay.

The translation feels distracting

Move the translated line lower, reduce its size, or keep the original subtitle more prominent. A good setup should help you stay in the story, not split your attention.

Start with your next episode.

Open a supported video, turn on captions and let 2Subs add the second subtitle line.
